KYT Rule Builder
The Rule Builder is where you create and manage the rules that Transaction Trust Monitoring (TTM) runs against your transactions. Each rule describes a pattern to catch and the action to take when a transaction matches it. Rules are built without code, can be tested against past transactions before they go live, and take effect as soon as they are published.
The Rule Builder is available from the Rule Builder item in the Back Office sidebar when Transaction Monitoring (KYT) and the Rule Builder are enabled for your account. KYT accounts without the Rule Builder manage their rules under Settings > Transaction Rules instead. See Settings > Transaction Rules.
Rules Library
The Rule Builder opens on the Rules Library, which lists all of your rules.
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Rule | The rule's short ID (for example R-297), name and description. |
| Discipline | AML or Fraud. |
| Published By | Who published the rule, and when. |
| Typology | The type of activity the rule targets. |
| Priority | High, Medium or Low. |
| Rule Set | The rule sets the rule belongs to. |
A rule name can carry these badges:
- Draft: a rule that has been saved but never published.
- Unpublished: a live rule with changes that have not been published yet.
- An AI icon: the rule was created with AI.
Finding Rules
- Search by: enter a rule ID or rule name.
- All Discipline and All Typologies: filter by discipline or typology.
- More Filters: filter by priority (All Priorities) and rule set (All Rule Sets), then click Apply.
Working with a Rule
Hover over a rule to see its actions:
- Version History: shows the rule's history. See Version History.
- Backtest: opens the rule on its Backtest tab. See Backtesting a Rule.
- Edit: opens the rule in the editor. You can also click the row.
- Delete: deletes the rule after you confirm.
- On/off toggle: pauses a live rule or resumes a paused one. A paused rule stays in the library but is not evaluated.
Saved drafts have only Edit and Delete.
Creating a Rule
Click Create New in the Rules Library.
1. Rule Details
In Create New Rule, enter:
- Rule Name (up to 60 characters)
- Typology
- Discipline: AML or Fraud
- Rule Set: one or more rule sets. You can create a new rule set from this list. See Rule Sets.
- Description (up to 500 characters)
Click Continue. Nothing is saved until you publish or save a draft. You can change these details later with the edit icon next to the rule name.
2. Conditions
Under When these conditions are met, click Add a Condition and choose a condition type:
| Condition type | What it checks |
|---|---|
| Value Check | A single datapoint, attribute or profile field against a value, for example amount greater than 1000. Supports comparisons such as equals, greater than, in a list, between two values, undefined and empty, and comparing against another attribute. |
| Activity Over Time | An aggregate over a time window, for example the count or sum of transactions in the last 24 hours, compared against a threshold. Time windows can be minutes, hours, days, weeks, months (rolling 30-day windows) or a custom range. |
| Compare Metrics | One value or aggregate against another value or aggregate, each with an optional multiplier. |
| Group | A nested group of conditions. |
Connect conditions with AND, OR, AND NOT or OR NOT, and drag conditions to reorder them. A plain-English preview of the rule updates as you build it.
To see which datapoints and attributes you can use, click Discover Attributes.
3. Actions
Under Then perform these actions, set:
Select Action:
Action Effect Approve Approves the transaction. Decline Declines the transaction. Manual Review Sends the transaction for manual review. Watch Records the match on the transaction without changing the decision. Set Priority: Low, Medium or High.
Set Score: the score the rule sets on a matching transaction, from 0 to 100. Choose Static for one score, or Random Score for a score within a minimum and maximum.
4. Review and Publish
Click Review & Publish. The button is enabled once the name, typology, discipline, action, priority, score and at least one condition are set, and something has changed since the last publish.
The Review Rule Details window shows the rule's typology, discipline, rule set, priority, score, action and condition. Click Publish Rule. Once published, the rule starts evaluating live transactions immediately.
If the new rule overlaps with an existing rule of the same typology and similar conditions, you are warned that keeping both may create duplicate alerts. Choose Replace Existing Rule or Keep Both Rules.
Publishing does not require a second person's approval.
Saving a Draft
To leave the editor without publishing, click Discard and then Save to Draft. The rule appears in the Rules Library with a Draft badge. Choosing Discard instead loses all unsaved changes.
Editing a Rule
Open a rule from the Rules Library, change it, and publish it again through Review & Publish. While changes are not yet published, the rule shows an Unpublished badge and the published version stays live.
Version History
Version History lists what happened to a rule: created, published, paused, resumed, deleted, restored and draft changes, with who did it and when. Published entries show what changed, for example the action, priority, score or condition.
- To look at an earlier version, open it from the history. Click Restore This Version to load it into the editor, then publish it to make it the current rule, or click Back to Current Rule.
- A deleted rule can be brought back with Restore on its deletion entry.
The Version History icon at the top of the Rules Library shows the same history for all of your rules.
Backtesting a Rule
Backtesting replays a rule against your past transactions so you can see what it would have done before you rely on it. Open the rule's Backtest tab, or choose Backtest in the Rules Library.
- Choose the Time Window (hours, days, months or a custom range).
- Choose the Rule Version to test. Only published versions can be backtested, so a new rule must be published first.
- Optionally, use Exclude rules to leave other live rules out of the run, and choose the transaction Status (All or Final Approved).
- Run the backtest.
The results show the total hits, the hit rate, and the Unique Hits, Decisive Hits and Duplicated Hits, by count or by value, plus a table of the other rules that hit the same transactions.
Rule Sets
A rule set is a named, coloured label that groups rules. Every rule belongs to at least one rule set, chosen in the rule details. You can create a rule set while creating or editing a rule: open the Rule Set list, choose Create New Rule Set, enter a name and click Add Set.
Rule sets also decide which rules run on a transaction. Your API request selects rule sets with the rule_sets field, using the rule set names exactly as they appear in the Rule Builder. Rules in a rule set are applied only when the request sends that rule set's name. See Rule Sets in the API documentation.
Rules Performance
Click Rules Performance in the Rules Library to see how your rules are performing.
- Filters: action (Approve, Decline, Watch, Manual Review, Custom), hits (all, decisive or non-decisive), count or value, and the date range.
- Charts: Hits by action and Hits by rules.
- Rules Overview: each rule with its action, hits, value and trend. Search by rule name, and switch between all rules, rules with hits, and selected rules. From a rule's menu, choose See transactions or See rule logic.
Creating Rules with AI
The Rule Builder has two AI features. Both send information to an AI model (Google Gemini) to produce suggestions. Always review AI suggestions before you publish a rule.
AI Rule Builder
AI Rule Builder generates a set of starter rules from a short questionnaire about your business. It is available when AI rules are enabled for your account. Open it with Create with AI in the Rules Library.
- Industry: your industry, sub-industry and customer type.
- Transactions Assessment: the factors to assess, for example transaction details, IP location and jurisdictions, sanctions and PEP, device and account details.
- Typologies: the risk scenarios to detect, for example Structuring/Smurfing or Rapid Fire Transactions, with their thresholds and time windows.
- Regulation & Risk Appetite: the frameworks that apply to you and your risk appetite (Conservative, Balanced or Liberal).
- Review: click Generate Rules, review the generated rules, select the ones to keep and click Continue.
Your questionnaire answers are sent to the AI model. Your existing rules are not sent. The selected rules are saved as drafts in the Rules Library. Add a typology and rule set to each, then publish them.
AI Rule Assistant
The AI Rule Assistant suggests conditions and an action for the rule you are building. Open it with Create with AI on the rule editor once the rule has a description.
- Confirm or edit the description in Create this rule with AI? and click Proceed.
- The assistant shows Recommended Conditions & Datapoints, a Recommended Action (risk score, priority and action) and a Duplicate & Conflict Check against your existing rules.
- Click Apply to Rule to use the suggestion. If the rule already has conditions, you are asked whether to replace them.
To produce suggestions, the assistant sends the AI model the rule's description, name, discipline and typology, the attributes available on your account, and a summary of your existing rules (their names, typologies, priorities, actions, descriptions and conditions). The number of assistant requests per account is limited each day.
Discover Attributes
Discover Attributes lists the datapoints and attributes you can use in rule conditions, with each one's type, values, operators and an example. Open it from the rule editor or from Settings > KYT Settings. You can search attributes, export the list as CSV, and start a new rule from an attribute with Create New Rule.
Settings > Transaction Rules
KYT accounts that do not have the Rule Builder enabled manage the same transaction rules under Settings > Transaction Rules. The page has these sections:
| Section | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rules | Create, edit and deploy rules for your transactions. When AI rules are enabled for your account, rules can also be generated with the AI Rule Generator. |
| Rules Performance | Track rule hit rates, approvals, declines and effectiveness over time. |
| Discover Attributes | Browse the datapoints and attributes available for building rules. |
| Rule Templates | Start from pre-built templates to create rules faster. |
| Deployments History | View the deployment history of your rules. |
| Rule Alerts | Set up alerts for your configured rules. |
An account uses either the Rule Builder or Settings > Transaction Rules, never both. Both screens manage the same rules.
